Praga-Południe is a district where parents often settle deliberately — large apartments in Saska Kępa’s pre-war buildings, green Grochów, close to the centre but without tourist crowds. For a family with a 1-6 year old it’s a dream location: two children’s libraries, parks within stroller reach, easy access to Łazienki Park and Pole Mokotowskie, intimate cafés instead of shopping malls.
This guide was written from our team at Krasnoludków (operating in Saska Kępa since 2009) and conversations with hundreds of families who live here. What’s here — we’ve actually tested. What isn’t — we’ll say honestly.
Our place on the Saska Kępa map
We’re at ul. Irlandzka 7 — in the heart of Saska Kępa, 5-10 minutes walk from most of the district. We run a nursery (1-3 years) and preschool (3-6 years) with a native English speaker daily, French 3× a week, our own kitchen and SI/TUS/speech/psychology therapy on site. 16 years running.
If you’re looking for a place for your child — come for a tour. If you already have one — this article is about what’s worth knowing about the whole district, not just an educational facility.
Playgrounds in Saska Kępa and surroundings
1. Skaryszewski Park (named after I. J. Paderewski) — the district’s flagship park, Kamionkowskie Lake. Two large playgrounds: one at ul. Zieleniecka (for toddlers 1-3, low slides, sandbox, safe fenced area), the other at ul. Międzynarodowa (for older children 4-8, climbing frame, zip line, slides). Summer fountains and a swimming spot. Year-round ducks on the lake.
2. Playground at Skwer Adama Cioneka (Saska Kępa) — small, but in the district’s centre. „Scandinavian-style” — wooden elements, natural materials, picnic spot. Shady in the afternoons.
3. Playground at ul. Zwycięzców (between Francuska and Saska) — typical neighbourhood playground. Plus: close to bakeries and the „Saska Kafe” café, so the parent gets coffee.
4. Park nad Kanałem Gocławskim — large open space, bike paths, playground at ul. Saska. For 4+ kids who like bikes / scooters.
5. Playground in Park Polińskiego (Grochów) — larger playground, various ages. Near Bazar Olimpia (Saturday shopping).
6. Park Henrykowski (Kamionek) — less known, less crowded, ideal for afternoon trips. Playground for 2-6 year olds.
Children’s libraries and books
Library for Children no. 33 (Saska Kępa, ul. Saska 9) — small, intimate, great offer for 0-6 year olds. Group reading weekly (check schedule). The librarian knows local children by name — an old-school model.
Library for Children and Youth no. 47 (Grochów, ul. Garibaldiego) — larger, more activities (art workshops, author meetings). For older children 4+.
Empik on Saska (ul. Francuska) — children’s corner with reading-on-site option, coffee for parent. Not expensive but commercial.
Family-friendly cafés and restaurants
Café Krzywy Komin (ul. Zwycięzców) — their „Sunday brunch” is built for families: toy corner, high chairs, menu with cooked things without sugar. Crowded on weekends.
Hala Koszyki / nearby (across the bridge) — technically not Praga-Południe, but 15 minutes from Saska Kępa. Indoor seating, lots of menu options, easy for a family with 2-3 children.
Bazar Olimpia (Grochów) — Saturday market, lots of local producers, fruits, meats, fresh bread. The child sees „where food comes from”. Worth it for families with the budget.
Lody Maciusiowe (ul. Francuska) — Saska’s icon. Artisan ice cream, safe for children with allergies (they have dairy-free sorbets). Holiday queues.
Activities for children at our preschool — what you get with us
Many families ask „what about such-and-such activity after hours?”. We answer honestly: in our tuition you get everything important under one roof, without extra fees or afternoon logistics.
- Native English speaker — daily in the group 9:00-13:00 (Les Petits Krasnoludków)
- French — our original „Les Petits Français” programme 3× a week
- Rhythm with Batii Strauss method — music combined with movement, 2× a week
- Ceramics and art — own studio
- Corrective gymnastics with trainer — once a week
- LEGO robotics — for the older group
- Educational trips and theme days — every month a different „adventure”
Plus therapy if needed (SI, TUS, speech, psychology, special needs educator) — without driving across Warsaw to three different addresses.
We don’t offer swimming at the preschool (no on-site pool) — the nearest public one is OSiR Praga-Południe (al. Stanów Zjednoczonych).
Pediatricians and child specialists — what’s worth knowing
Family pediatrician: look for someone with hours in Saska or Grochów (shorter to the office in case of fever). Local NFZ vs private visit — check both options depending on insurance.
Speech therapist / psychologist / SI / TUS: at our preschool all these forms of support are on site, included in tuition for our preschoolers — see our full therapy team. For children outside the facility: Psychological-Pedagogical Clinic no. 6 (ul. Garwolińska) is public and free (long waiting lists).
Pediatric dentist: several private practices on Saska — ask about experience with very young children (2-4 years) and anaesthesia. Not every dentist can work with a 3-year-old.
Family trips 15-30 minutes from Praga-Południe
ZOO (Świętokrzyski Bridge → across the Vistula): 15 minutes by car, bus 162. Large, good playground, seasonal attractions. For 3+ years.
Copernicus Science Centre (Powiśle, near Łazienkowski Bridge): 15-20 min by public transport. „Bajtek” — zone for 3-6 year olds. Holiday-crowded.
Łazienki Park (Łazienkowski Bridge → Belweder): 20 min by public transport. Classic park, lots of greenery, peacocks, palace. Good for a whole day.
Pole Mokotowskie (Łazienkowski Bridge → Mokotów): classic „bike spot”, summer fountains, winter ice rink.
Krasiński Garden + Old Town (Świętokrzyski Bridge): 25 min, good for Saturday afternoon. For 4+ kids the Old Town is „fairytale”.
What Praga-Południe is missing
Honestly: a few things either don’t exist or are weak:
Indoor pool for the youngest (1-3 years) — OSiR Praga-Południe is ok, but water temperature isn’t always adapted to infants. Most often parents drive to Mokotów (Aquapark Wesoła) or Wilanów.
Large play centres with inflatables / for 2-4 years — Praga-Południe has a few, but the standard is lower than Mokotów’s. The best options are in shopping centres across the Vistula.
Dairy bar / local kitchen with kids menu — most Saska Kępa cafés are built for adults. You have to ask about menu adaptation (plain pierogi, pasta without sauce).
Public transport — when you don’t have a car
Saska Kępa → centre (Świętokrzyska/Marszałkowska): bus 158, 117, 521 — 15-25 min. Tram 22, 24 from al. Waszyngtona — 20-30 min.
Saska Kępa → Mokotów/Wilanów: bus 102, 158, 521 — 20-30 min, or tram + transfer.
Saska Kępa → northern districts (Białołęka): car is best, transit is long (1h+ with transfers).
Closest M2 metro: Stadion Narodowy station (15 min walk from most of Saska Kępa) or Copernicus Science Centre (Świętokrzyski Bridge). This translates to 25-30 min commute to most parts of Warsaw.
Summary — why families stay here long
Praga-Południe is a stable district for families — most families who settle here stay 5-10+ years. The reasons we hear most often:
- Scale (Saska is a small community — you know your neighbours)
- Greenery (Skaryszewski Park + over Gocławski Canal + walk along Vistula)
- Distance from tourist centre (quieter than Śródmieście)
- Easy logistics (preschool, shop, doctor — all 10 min walking)
